We decided to have a short stop on our journey from Staffordshire to Gwynedd to bag this trig. Very pleased we did. Drove through Uffington (will try the pub next time) and pulled in at SJ 53238 13410 next to disused canal and under high voltage lines. The public footpath starts here and leads to a track. As others have mentioned, the trig is off the track. We then continued along this track through the woods on Haughmond Hill (a couple of left turns) before rejoining the public footpath back to the car.

A beautiful Autumn's day. On the way back home from Shropshire. Morning in the jewel that is Stokesay Castle. Last stop at Church Stretton... coffee and walnut cake and local cheeses. Then a quick hop to this beautiful hill - a fine trig then to the hilltop view (someone round here must like the Open University) seeing some joyous places from this year and all the others also looking with quiet happiness back towards the north.

Dirt pull-in on minor road to SW (SJ 5385 1294). RoW going NE seemed fine, but it doesn't easily link into the Haughmond Hill woodland. However, once in the woodland there are multiple paths to choose from. The pillar sits on a plinth just off one of them. It has a recess, presumably for a regimental crest, but whether fitted and lost or never fitted is unknown. Centre cap missing, tube has an asphalt plug; LHD side and rear sight holes open. No views.

Parked on the road to the south west of the pillar. Took the public right of way (PRoW) from there which weaves its way up Houghmond Hill in a zigzag pattern. A footpath to the west of the pillar takes you from the PRoW up to the pillar. Great setting. This pillar was built by the Royal Engineers in the mid 1940's. They would place their regimental crest on to the pillar. However, whilst the pillar has a recess to hold a crest, the crest either was not installed or has been lost. Wynnstay Hall near Ruabon, Wrexham, was used as a training establishment for the Royal Engineers Survey Cadre, and as part of their training during the 1943-47 period, the trainees were tasked with building some of the secondary and third order pillars. 8 pillars have the crest. This pillar is 1 of 6 pillars which have the recess, but no crest.

Pleasent area to walk round, but stick to the paths: the woodland is very dense, and can be tough going. The pillar clearly had some extra adornment above the flush bracket.

Concrete top, possible marking of where there was an emblem on the pillar. Very limited view due to the trees.

Haughmond Hill: In a clearing, surrouded by trees and a familiar orienteering landmark(horrid brambly forest). The place for the Salop folk to empty their dogs, so watch your step. Good mountain biking as well. Pillar is OK except for a concrete plug replacement. Its on a plinth on a rocky piece of ground.
