Metal plug (raised letters). Pillar has large crack. Struggled through small wood of nettles & brambles on SW side, but then just a slog up the open field, over one gate & then up among the rocks & gorse to the trig at the top. Managed to find another way back to the road, avoiding the wood.

A bit of fresh air after juniors graduation while rest of family still snoozing. From x-road to west, not the best time of year to visit, with thick undergrowth on slopes. Brambles hidden in bracken had a field day on my bare legs. More open near pillar which sits on outcropping off rough hay field. Impressed how high up it felt, with sweeping views far away to the eastern horizon. Fortunately, had bottle of alcohol in car to clean up legs, even so, junior was observant enough to ask what the hell I'd been up to....

(2268) Drove up to Lubcloud Farm to ask about visiting the pillar. As I arrived, so did the daughter of the landowners. She was kind enough to phone her parents for me, and permission was freely given. She pointed out a couple of routes that I could take, and I opted for going from the layby (enough parking for about 4 or five cars) at the crossroads. A straight 10 minute walk to the pillar, dodging the cow pats as I went - though no livestock was present anywhere today. Pillar sits on a rocky outcrop, the first of four trigs like this encountered today in Leicestershire. And though misty, the views was pretty good. The pillar itself is in mostly good condition, and still retains its original centre cap. The only fly in the ointment is the fairly substantial crack running from the FB across to and along the RHS. A nice one to bag all told. Pillar history: Built on the 19th of November 1936, at a cost of £4 9s 0d. Last maintained by the OS in June of 1978.
