re-visit. Hadn't really been in my thoughts for the day, but occurred to me in passing. Gravelled road from double gates on A511 is a PROW, then a short walk up "tram lines" through crop. Base of pillar surrounded by large stones which have presumably been ploughed up. Both sides of the A511 have a wild strip with trees and bushes limiting sight of anything you are passing: it is totally different by the pillar looking out over a wide area. Very good cycleway beside the A511 Ashby bypass.

Parked in Tesco and walked up the bypass to the trigpoint – the ground was frozen and the crop only inches high so no problem crossing the field – continued my walk along the Ivanhoe Way then back through South Wood, Wicket Nook and Bryan’s Coppice. The paths in these woods partially follow the route of the Ashby light railway that took limestone from Ticknall to the kilns and iron furnace at Moira. Interesting walk on a cold bright day.
