I've given this one a higher rating based on the welcoming landowner - the pillar itself is a bit of a pig truth be told. Reading previous logs and scouting things on Google Earth, you're nowhere near any ROWs you can nip off, so I drove down the farm track fully prepared to go knocking for permission. Luckily, I didn't have to. As I neared the bend in the track, a couple doing a spot of metal detecting in the trig field came over - and the lady turned out to be the farmer's wife. We had a pleasant, brief chat and she was more than happy to grant permission to park up and nip down the field edge. She was a bit bemused by the whole situation, having had several recent callers (not T:UK loggers though it would seem) and even asked me if I was "in the club"...! She was lovely, and my thanks go to her and the farmer for being so accommodating - she did however ask me to pass on that anyone wishing to visit should please ask permission if at all possible by just calling at the house; it won't be a problem. The pillar sits only a short way down from the bend in the track, just in the scrubby field edge. It is a bit battered, having been relocated from the middle of the field and not re-sunk in the ground, so the footings are all visible and it has got a bit of a lean to it. It still has all its metalwork present, however.

(1600) Drove up to and called in at Rye Topping Farm. The lady of the house was happy to let my visit the pillar, and knew about the hobby - "We've had 3 callers recently who wanted to see it." Pillar removed from original field location around 2005 - marked as 'destroyed' by the OS in October of 2007. The pillar is now to be found at field edge close to a small wood. Foundations exposed, and leaning slightly, but in good condition nonetheless. Also viewed the original location. Pillar history: Built on the 17th of April 1951, at a cost of £14 13s 9d. Last maintained by the OS in June of 1984.

Aaargh another failure. I'd wandered into middle of harvested field stubble and was going to report back that it'd gone. I did pick up a fine firm smallish giant puffball that had just sprouted after harvest. What a pain that my phone battery died half an hour before and I'd not been able to read notes again and hadn't transferred any on to my map. I now recall reading something about this one moving. I had a little look along woodland edge anyway but not dilligently, which I would've done if I'd realised it was still there.

Didn't venture into the field but its newly planted and so nothing to obstruct the view. Even if toppled, the trig should have been visible but there was no sign of it, the hump it was relocated to, or the original field edge. I checked from the E end of the farm drive, from the roadside and from the track on the N edge of the present boundary - just a big open field. So it appears to have been either destroyed or moved again at some point since the previous visit 2 years ago 8-( Trig symbol still shown on current OS 1:50000 and 1:25000. Geograph has a photo of the trig dated 4 July 2006 so that narrows down the date somewhat.
