TP1460 - Blackstones Low

Same route as Rhayader Wanderer - all over access land. The natural rocky outcrops were more attractive than the TP. View spoiled by quarry
Did this one on a circular walk from Brassington. Walked up the road past Tarmac and a steep ascent on to the top. Had to climb over a wall topped with barbed wire but no other problem. Reasonable views, quarries excepted. My 150th celebrated with a drop of single malt.
Approached from Quarry side as recommended in previous logs.Good views.
Pillar in good condition complete with all metalwork. Not at the highest point of the hill, nor on any of the numerous rock outcrops, but slightly lower down next to a field wall. 180 degree view to west, but not much view east. Approached from quarry side via steep drag up to open gate, then easy stroll over pasture land.
Plug intact, back sighting hole open. E side of wall, not at the highest point. Approached from E via gate then access land. Quarries again.
Took mickandshanes advice and parked at the quarry and walked up the steep bank to the wall admiring the wild flowers on the way.
easy access from the quarry side, a small amount of snow on the hills and a lovely walk up to the trigpoint, shame about the quarry.
On the side of the wall below the summit. Nice stiff climb up from a single pull in on the road to the East can see an easier western approach would appeal though. lots of early purple orchids(?)
On rough, rocky hill, by a wall.
Resisted the urge to take the car to the top Mick, after recent exploit in France. After following the stone wall on the track it is easier to still follow the track up and round to the right giving a gentle run up to the trig position, especially for those with 'achilles problem'.
Access to this is easiest from the quarry side. You can drive past the quarry and park where the metalled track to Roystone Grange starts. The area past the cattle grid is access land, so if you head uphill parallel to a stone wall at the second bend in the road this takes you almost to the trig. There's just one gate to climb and a 100 metre walk to the trig which is next to the wall. Nice views, plug with indented lettering.
pleasant hill, lovely view, TP oddly 3-4m below summit with apparently inferior view as a result |
