This one fascinated me as most people seem to log the Environmental Agency Bench Mark. I was sure that this was not the Ordnance Survey bolt so I downloaded the photo and engineers hand drawn map from the OS website, took a hi-vis jacket, two 50 metre tape measures, a hand held metal detector and a clipboard along to the location. Standing on the EA-BM and looking at the OS photo, it was obviously in totally the wrong location. The clincher was the note on the engineers drawing that states “Block 6 inches below surface” which the EA-BM very obviously isn’t. I’d noted a previous log from Hi-Tek, when in 2004 he found what appeared to be a ‘Berntsen’ close by so I set out my tape measures according to the OS engineers map (much to the fascination of some passing ‘muggles’). I didn’t find the stainless steel cover shown in Hi-Tek’s photo but in exactly the right location was a circular, cast iron cover secured with a single screw (should be two but one was missing). Selecting the correct tool from my mobile workshop (Leatherman Wave) I removed the screw and lifted the cover. Sure enough, about 6” below the surface was a vertical rod about 3” long. It was domed and had a drilled centre mark in the end. I’m certain that this is the OS station referred to on the OS web site. According to the OS, this site was last checked in March 2001 when the co-ordinates were recorded as N50° 46’ 57.8585” W001° 09’ 22.0978”. Converted to decimal minutes, that’s N50° 46.9643’ W001° 09.3683’ which is almost exactly what my 60CSx is showing in the photo. I suspect that this is what Hi-Tek found six years ago but the cover has been changed in the intervening period. I feel the information given in the ‘Flush Bracket Number’ field above is very misleading and should be removed.
never seen one like this before!
Not sure about this 1, I don\\\'t think the EA bench mark is what we are looking, I took the O/S sketch with me(but no tape measure, clever that),the EA benchmark is certainly not in the right place according to the sketch, even without a tape I could tell that, I have left condition as unknown until somebody can tell me otherwise.UPDATE:17/05/2010 Have changed my logged condition to Cnf,suspected at the time the EA benchmark was not correct and now comfired.
Parking was 20m from the bolt and it was easily found. Brilliant views over the Solent, currently the parking place of the huge US carrier Theodore Roosevelt
Found the metal stud (environmental agency bench mark) but could not find the Berntsen marker. There was a small hole nearby maybe its been damaged. Can anyone give me any more info.
Great views over Solent. Bolt appears "rusty"
1st Trig point that I've logged so score is difficult to judge, but I figured it would score well. Hmm, I found a bolt. Will revisit next time I'm kite flying and look for the burntsen.
I have to disagree with Sapper on this one unless the bolt has been covered with a Berntsen marker since he located it. I found this today @ N50 46.966 W001 09.368. It was a few yards off the promenade in a park. I had to clean some mud off it to see the detail. GPSr elev = -5ft.
On the windy Solent seafront - nice views. |
