A short diversion off the A1 whilst driving south. Parked up in one of the spaces by the track that leads to the recreation area, then a nice easy short walk up past the playing fields to the hillock with the pillar atop. Not the best views but would be a good place to watch the cricket on the field below. Beer in the Punch Bowl Inn at Morton afterwards.

(2385) Getting from the trigpoint at Linton-on-Ouse to Grafton meant making use of the Aldwark Toll Bridge. Luckily I had some change in the car for the - 40p - crossing. Once in Grafton and just off Thorny Hill Lane there is a few parking spots at the start of the track leading to the sports field, though you can also drive up to the playground area as well. Apart from a dog walker I had the place to myself today. The pillar sits perched on a little hill overlooking the sports field and is readily visible thanks to its coat of white paint. Not knowing the area I made the climb up, and used the steps coming down. Pillar in fine condition and still sporting its original centre cap. Adopted by the Harrogate Ramblers Club in 1994, and is semi-regularly painted. A lovely one to end the day on - well, almost. The nearby water tower is also a trigpoint, and I bagged that just before leaving. Pillar history: Built on the 5th of June 1939, at a cost of £3 9s 9d. Last maintained by the OS in March of 1975.

A wonderful pillar. We parked up in Grafton at the small hardstanding at the bottom of the lane and walked up. The view as you come over the brow of the rise is fantastic - I was amazed at the pillar, atop a mini hill, and my little companion was ecstatic that the trig stands guard over a playground. Win-win today. The trig commands a superb spot overlooking the playground and sports fields, and having been adopted by the Harrogate Rambling Club, the access staircases were in great condition. The pillar was fine, except for heavy weathering; it has what looked like an original cap, although I am no expert. It also featured a small plaque courtesy the aforementioned Ramblers. A great trig, this. Also the 17th pillar for my little companion.
